Hieroglyhpic Background 2

Gloucestershire Lettering Arts (GLA - incorporating Glevum Scribes) is a non-profit making, Cotswold-based society for calligraphy enthusiasts, offering an arena for professionals, committed amateurs and newcomers to enjoy the many and varied aspects of the lettering arts of today.

GLA aims to raise the level of awareness about how calligraphy, lettering and the book arts (essentially forms of communication) are in fact expressive art forms - graphically interpreting thoughts and ideas, invariably conveying meaning before words are actually read.

Members' work is not restricted to black ink on white paper - we use a variety of grounds including wood, glass, ceramics, stone, fabrics and terracotta.  Our work is applied to
  • handwritten and bound books
  • maps and broadsheets
  • paper-cutting and sculpting
  • embossing and gilding
  • stencilling, rubber-stamping and many more projects
