About the Group

Gloucestershire Lettering Arts (GLA - incorporating Glevum Scribes) is a non-profit making, Cotswold-based society for calligraphy enthusiasts, offering an arena for professionals, committed amateurs and newcomers to enjoy the many and varied aspects of the lettering arts of today.

Coming Up ...

The CLAS exhibition entitled 'All that Glisters' is travelling to Bath Central Library, 19 The Podium, Northgate Street, Bath, BA1 5AN and will be open every day from Tues 15th May to Fri 25th May 2012 inclusive. An opportunity not to be missed.

Our next Exhibition will be at the Gloucester Folk Museum from September to November 2012 on the subject of rural writing. The exhibition title is ‘Fruits of our Labour’.

Plans are being made for hosting the next CLAS Regional Day in 2013. This is a great honour and members are all encouraged to help where they can.

Our Aim

GLA aims to raise the level of awareness of calligraphy, lettering and the book arts. These expressive art forms - graphically interpreting thoughts and ideas, invariably convey meaning before words are actually read.

Our Workshops

We run monthly workshops at Highnam Community Hall, usually in the Gambier-Parry Hall and we have an interesting varied programme for the coming year.

AGM News

Barbara presents Sue Hodgkinson with the engraved rose bowl, awarded to her for winning the members’ vote for the best ‘thank you’ card in the competition at the AGM in April.

Rachel Wales, an archivist from Canada, pictured below, gave us an interesting talk on the dos and donts of picture framing.

There was an abundance of  lovely papers and calligraphic supplies for sale and we enjoyed a social occasion over tea and cake.
